VOLUME 147, ISSUE 5 MAY 2011
I want to thank all the members that showed for Burbank on Parade. What a day, and what a surprise to see Ron Howard show up and put on one of our Road King hats while going down the parade route. I want to thank Ron for running with the Kings that day and for making the parade experience even more memorable. Thank you Nasty Noel for the effort you and Rikki put out to get him to Burbank.
We have a long list of events taking place throughout the year, but to let you know they can always change at the last minute. So get your rides out of the winter covers and spruce them up for summer.
Don Baldaseroni has information regarding the car show, so take it away Don!

Road King Member of the Month
Don Siglar’s 1936 Ford, 5 Window Coupe
Don had wanted to build a chopped 1936 Ford, 5 window for some time. He looked for a car to build for several years but was unable to find anything decent. On Ebay, Don saw a 1935, 5 window that was already chopped that did not sell. The car was located in Monterey, CA. so he drove up to take a look at it.
The car had a nice 3″ chop, 383/350 with a well built TCI chassis. Since Don knew that the ’35 & ’36 bodies were identical he bought the car. The conversion to a ’36 started with an aftermarket grill, Walker radiator with two SPAL fans, fiberglass fenders, and eventually three hoods to get four good sections. Of course, the fenders didn’t fit so we cut each fender into six pieces, and mounted them to the car, matching the grill, hood, cowel, and running board. He lowered the headlights and made each fender one piece instead of two pieces.
Don changed the springs, front and rear, added power steering, and A/C. All trim, bumpers, and running board covers are from Bob Drake Reproductions. He mounted Wheelsmith steel wheels, and Coker white wall tires.
The paint is hot hues Viper Red applied by Jason Pecikonis at Timeless Kustoms in Camarillo. The interior is red tuck n’ roll done by Tony Montes in Oxnard.
The car is finally finished and won first in class at this years Grand National Roadster Show.
RELAY FOR LIFE
One last plea, “Please bring all donations to the May meeting. A check would be appreciated for Relay. Remember everyone knows someone with cancer or someone that has had cancer, so if all 100 members were to donate we just might take first place or second. So if at all possible, please give what you can.
We need members to walk. The event starts on Saturday, May 14 with the Survivors Walk to kick off the day, and goes until 8am on Sunday (24 hours), so get your walking shoes on and let me see your smiling faces over at Johnny Carson Park. Please see Don Baldaseroni for further information.
BURBANK ON PARADE
It was a celebration of the young and old on Saturday as Burbank on Parade’s Centennial Celebration made it’s way down Olive Ave. on a picture perfect morning. From the 100 year-old grand marshals to the young children seeing their first parade from the comfort of their strollers, there was something for everyone and every generation. Ron Howard, one of Burbank’s most famous native sons, made an appearance in Burbank On Parade much to the surprise of the thousands of spectators who lined Olive Ave. It was also a surprise to parade organizers and even to Ron himself. Ron’s appearance came about quite by accident, and in large part due to friendships that started at Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School back in 1959. A resident of New York, Ron was in town on business. He took time out of his schedule to visit with one of his boyhood friends, Noel Salvatore. Noel is a member of the Road Kings, and was at Burbank On Parade with his Camaro Z28, joining other member of the club driving in the parade. Everything came together and Ron Howard rode down the parade route to the delight of the hometown crowd, the parade committee. cited: Burbank n’ Beyond Stan Lynch
MOPAR SPRING FLING CAR SHOW
Hemi Tom and Nasty Noel won first place trophies at the MOPAR Spring Fling on Sunday, April 17th. Out of 600 registered cars, they were the only two Road Kings and they swept the carpet. You should have been there!

ROAD KINGS SHINE AT FONTANA
WOW! What a Day. The Road Kings it the highway or should I say the raceway at speeds of 140 – 160 mph. Don Hoffman, Jimmy Miles, “Fast” Eddie, Chuck Stein, and Don Siglar spent the day at Fontana reliving their youthful days of racing. One problem, as you can see in a couple of the photos above, their youthful exuberance did not help when trying to climb into the car and place their senior butts onto the seat (thank god we don’t have sound). “Fast” Eddie was celebrating his birthday by just trying to survive the day (#28 car). Congratulations Boys for a job well done.
DRAG RACE REPORT APRIL, 2011.
GREETINGS FELLOW ROAD KINGS AND QUEENS, MY FRIEND NORM AND I WENT TO BAKERSFIELD FOR SOME GOOD OLD FASHION A/GAS DRAG RACING, OF COURSE ITS ON AN INDEX, AND WE GO A LITTLE FASTER THAN THE A/GASER’ OF YEST ER YEAR. AS USUAL THE G.T.O DID IT’S NORMAL QUALIFYING NEAR THE TOP, A 7.62 OFF THE TRAILER WHICH WAS GOOD FOR THE # 2 SPOT..THIS WAS A NEW ASSOCIATION, CALLED A,N,R,A, OR AMERICAN NATIONAL RACING ASSOCIATION. A GREAT GROUP OF GUYS AND GALS. I KNEW QUITE A FEW FROM OTHER ASSOCIATIONS INCLUDING WEST COAST HOT ROD, P.S.C.A AND N.H.R.A. THE ANNOUNCER LOVES MY CAR AND ALWAYS PLUGS THE ROAD KINGS.QUALIFYING WAS HELD TO 2 RUNS ON SATURDAY DO TO A LOT OF OIL DOWNS, BUT I WAS WELL IN THE FIELD. SUNDAY WAS A GORGEOUS DAY IN THE 70′S NOT A CLOUD IN SITE. THE EARLY ROUNDS WERE EASY WINS, AS ONE BROKE AND THE OTHER WENT UP IN SMOKE. QUARTER FINALS GOT ME AS I EXPERIENCED THE DREADED TIRE SHAKE, I CAUGHT IT QUICK BUT SLOWED TO A 7.76 AND MY OPPONENT RAN 7.64, BUT I HAD A GREAT LITE OF .028 TO HIS 1.10. BUT NO MATTER HOW YOU SLICE IT, HE GOT THERE FIRST BY A .002 MARGIN OF VICTORY. THESE RACES ARE GETTING SO CLOSE AS YOU GET CLOSE TO THE LAST FEW CARS. WE ARE GETTING CLOSER EVERY RACE AND EXPECT TO GET BACK IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE SOON. ON THE FLIP SIDE I AM HAVING MORE FUN THAN A MAN SHOULD WITH HIS PANTS ON. NEXT RACE IS THAT 10.5 TIRE OUTLAW CLASS IN MAY SO ALL I HAVE TO DO IS CHANGE ABOUT 20 DIFFERENT SETTINGS TO GET THIS BEAST DOWN THE TRACK IN MY LANE ON THAT LITTLE TIRE. HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL SOON. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT BROTHER AL WHITE
Larry Dixon, Al-Anabi Racing Top Fuel Dragster (silver)
Qualifying: Larry Dixon was the No. 4 qualifier ay the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals. During the second round of qualifying, Dixon recorded a 3.863-second pass at 316.60 mph.
Eliminations: Dixon defeated Clay Millican, Antron Brown and Tony Schumacher before losing to teammate Del Worsham in the final round of eliminations.
Unofficial Point Standings: Dixon remains second in the NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel point standings. He trails his teammate, first-place Del Worsham, by 95 points and leads third-place Antron Brown by 47 points.
Dixon on Royal Purple Raceway: “It was a good day. Only one guy had a better day than we did, and it happens to be my teammate. So that’s cool. I’m happy for Del, and I’m happy for us, and I’m happy for the entire Al-Anabi team. I’m happy that we put some space in points between ourselves and the rest of the class so it was a good race all around. We’ll go to the next race in two weeks, and see if we can get both Al-Anabi cars in the final round again.
“Having both cars in the final isn’t something you dwell on or think about. The lanes are independent, and I didn’t treat it any differently from any other round. We came up a couple of hundredths from holding up a trophy. The good news is the Al-Anabi team finished 1-2 and kept everyone else out of the final round.”
Next Race: The Al-Anabi Racing team will be back in action May 13-15, 2011 at the 31st annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga. near Atlanta.
